The Dallas Cowboys definitely played one of their best all around games on Sunday to beat the Steelers 27-24 in OT. Brandon Carr capped off the game with a pick off of Ben Roethlisberger in OT to put the Cowboys at the one, and in position for the Dan Bailey game-winning field goal. This was the first time in all their meetings that they have met in OT.
Brandon Carr said that he was anticipating the throw to Wallace in OT.
“Todd Haley was my coach for three years in Kansas City,” said Carr. “He’s their offensive coordinator, so I kind of got a feel for how he likes to attack. I was kind of waiting go that play the whole game. I didn’t get it early on, but I was playing with vision. I made a move for the ball. He threw it behind him and I just laid out for it.”
Carr, who has taken much criticism from Dallas fans, has silenced them for now with his play the past few weeks.
Another man who has silenced his critics for now, is head coach Jason Garrett, who in the wake of Jerry Brown's death has showed a tremendous amount of composure and leadership.
“There’s a relentlessness to the group. There’s an undeniable will to the group and I think those are really important traits to have,” said Jason Garrett. “While it’s never perfect and never pretty, the guys kept battling and picking each other up. That’s a good football team we played. I told the guys, they’ve been good for about 45 years.”
One of the surprising things about this game was that the defense played relatively well, aside from being injury depleted. They made big time plays in crunch time, something we haven't seen them do a whole lot this year. Sean Lissemore and Anthony Spencer had back to back sacks on Big Ben, putting the Steelers in a 3rd and 26 situation. I found myself hoping and praying that Ben didn't pull a Donovan McNabb to Todd Pinkston on 4th and 26 back in 2005. The Cowboys however stalled on their final drive of regulation, and after a 61 yard field goal tease, headed into OT. Overtime didn't last long as Carr came up with the interception, and Bailey nailed the field goal.
QB Tony Romo has been on fire as of late, and he didn't flame out last night. The QB finished with 341 yards, 2 TDs, and 30/42 passing attempts. He hit Jason Witten and Dez Bryant for the scores.
DeMarco Murray played a solid game as well, finishing with 81 yards on 14 carries and 1 TD.
All in all, I think the Cowboys played very well. They have won 5 of their last 6, something that has gone unnoticed. It was six weeks ago when they were sitting at 3-5 and the whole city of Dallas was calling for them to tank. Well good thing they didn't. The Cowboys (8-6), if they win out, will win the division and be in the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
